Holyoake has supported the Wheatbelt region with innovative, community focused prevention services for mental health & wellbeing, suicide prevention & AOD prevention.  With a strong track record in prevention, Holyoake will expand its AOD prevention into the Goldfields, Great Southern, Kimberley, Mid-west & South West through the newly established AOD Community Prevention Service.

Alcohol and Other Drugs Community Prevention Service

Commencing on 3 July 2023, Holyoake has been contracted by the Mental Health Commission to deliver the Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) Community Prevention Service across five regions in Western Australia, including the Kimberley, Mid-West, Goldfields, Great Southern, and South West.

The AOD Community Prevention Service will support grassroots groups to run prevention activities that seek to reduce harm from alcohol and other drugs in their local communities. These activities will address local needs, while aligning with the Australian Mental Health Promotion, Mental Illness, Alcohol and Other Drug Prevention Plan 2018-2025.

Community Engagement Officers with expertise in health promotion will drive the establishment of up to 30 local, grassroots Community Response Committees across the five regions.

Community Response Committees will be comprised of community members and agency stakeholders with a passion for AOD prevention. These Committees will develop localised Community Response Plans that provide a blueprint for the implementation of community-based AOD prevention activities that draw on current evidence as well as the wisdom of individuals, stakeholders and community groups to address complex problems with alcohol and other drugs.

Community Response Plans will support the overarching outcomes to –

  • Delay the onset of alcohol and other drugs use;
  • Reduce the harm associated with alcohol and other drugs supply and use; and
  • Improve the health and wellbeing of individuals, families and community.

Activities incorporated into Community Response Plans may include initiatives that aim to increase knowledge of the NHMRC’s ‘Alcohol Drinking Guidelines’ and awareness of the risks associated with licit and illicit drug use, facilitate individuals’ help-seeking capabilities or increase protective factors and/or reduce risk factors against AOD harm. Annual grants of up to $2000 will be available for Community Response Groups to apply for to assist with the implementation of localised initiatives.

In the development and implementation of Community Response Committees, Holyoake aims to work beside and collaboratively with established AOD Prevention and related service providers in the regions. Initiatives incorporated within Community Response Plans will be supportive of existing evidence-based/informed programs while also empowering groups to implement new and innovative activities that address identified alcohol and other drugs issues impacting their local community.
