What is 'DRUMBEAT Around the World'Drumbeat around the world

Holyoake is seeking to link hand drumming groups around the world through a video project called 'DRUMBEAT Around the World'.

This is an open invitation for hand drumming group leaders to submit videos of their groups performing their version of the routine shown in the video posted on this site and described below.

We are hoping to involve up to 200 different drumming groups from across the world in this project, which will see the production of a video that links all the different groups into one united performance.

The DRUMBEAT around the World video project is linking community rhythm groups around the world to showcase the social benefits of drumming. People from all walks of life are involved in this project and represent the diverse nature of the global drumming community. This project is not linked to Holyoake's work with people with drug and alcohol issues. Participants represented in these videos are not identified as 'at risk'.

Why should I become involved?

If you believe that community and therapeutic drumming circles have a part to play in building healthy communities and reducing social isolation then this project is for you. It's aim is to showcase the world wide community drum circle movement and its use as a community building and therapeutic tool. A key focus of the work we do at Holyoake is to create a sense of belonging and connection for individuals who have become alienated from the broader community - more and more people find themselves in this position as the complexity of our world increases. We believe the drum circle, in both therapeutic and community settings, has a unique potential to connect people in a healthy way with others and restore their sense of place in the world around them. We hope you will join us.

How do I become involved?

Video your performance of the routine demonstrated in the video below and submit it by the end of September 2012.The routine follows the principles that underline the DRUMBEAT intervention which provide participants with basic rhythms to learn from initially and then gradually extends them into improvisation. If your group is a part based or improvised based group only then feel free to post in only this aspect of the performance. You are also welcome to add your own embellishments to the performance, respecting at the same time the integrity of the original as the underlying platform.

What happens next?

The videos will be edited and the final product will be released December 2012.

NB: In posting videos onto this site for inclusion in the 'DRUMBEAT around the World' project you are agreeing to Holyoake publishing the finished project online. All approvals for individuals to appear in these videos are the responsibility of the organisation/school posting the video. Holyoake recommends obtaining signed permission forms from participants prior to uploading your video onto this site.

14.Once everyone is in and playing their own parts invite different members to either direct from the circle (small groups) or come into the middle of the circle (large groups), to perform the following facilitation moves (Arthur Hull).
-Stop Cut & back to the groove (OK - Let's all play)
-Get softer, get louder & back to the groove
-Sculpt the group in half - one half plays while the other listens and claps and vice versa - back to the groove
